Dr. Ian Armstrong Background

Dr. Ian Armstrong is a board certified neurological surgeon with fellowship and specialty training in spinal surgery.  

Dr Armstrong is the founder and director of Southern California Spine institute established in 1996.  This organization offers premier comprehensive spinal care and has offices through out Southern California.

Dr Armstrong is a second generation physician.  His philosophy can be summarized as conservative compassionate patient care.


He has twenty years experience with cutting edge spinal surgery and his been involved in teaching, research, lecturing as well as  contributing to advances in the field of spinal surgery.  He specializes in the latest minimally invasive spinal surgery, motion preservation technology, major reconstructive spinal surgery, tumor spinal surgery, as well as an emphasis  in regenerative and restorative technologies for the spine.

He received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, completed a general surgery internship and then a neurosurgical residency at Baylor and the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical centers in the world and where he had the opportunity to train with Dr. Michael Debakey.  

He went on to do a Spinal Surgical Fellowship in Marseille, France with Rene Louis, a world renowned spinal surgeon and then completed an orthopedic and neurosurgical spinal fellowship in South Florida with David Cahill MD. 

He has been in practice for twenty years in the Los Angeles where he has served as Chief of Neurosurgery at Century City Hospital for ten years, Director of the Spinal Surgery Program at the same hospital as well as serving on the Hospital Governing Board and Director of Neurosurgical Trauma services.  He has been on staff at Cedars Sinai Hospital as an attending and was involved with the teaching programs. As well a serving as Medical Director of Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery at Southern California Hospital and serving as the Vice Chairman of the Governing Board of SCH in Los Angeles.  

He has been involved directly as a consultant to Hollywood including major motion pictures such as The Matrix and Spiderman II as well as many others.  He has appeared on The Doctors Show on a number of occasions as well as other national and local news programs.  He has also been a consultant to Pro athletic teams and players.
